Flexible work experiences in Great Britain provide some lessons for New Zealand as legislative provision gets nearer. Research reported in the October 2007 Equal Opportunities Review shows:

• substantial gaps between managerial and employee knowledge of the availability of work-life options
• women, older workers, single employees, the better educated and those with young children were more likely to have accurate information
• ethnic minority employees were least likely to know an option was available
• increasing provision is compatible with improving financial performance
• the most marked flexible working increase was switching from fulltime to part time work
• a widening disparity of access between female-dominated and male-dominated workplaces
• lower level of access in workplaces reliant on part time employees.
