The Spotlight on Hidden Skills is a tool (the first of its kind) to classify “the essential but hard-to-define and less visible elements of service sector skills; the various levels of proficiency in using these skills; and the way these skills are used in combination to provide quality service.” Spotlight was developed for the unit by Dr Anne Junor from the University of New South Wales and a team from New Zealand and Australia. The tool will be useful for a wide range of human resource functions.
Philippa Hall, director of the Pay and Employment Unit said “I am delighted that the Pay and Employment Equity Unit will be offering the Spotlight tool. It makes it much easier to describe and analyse some often-overlooked skills in service sector jobs, and improves the management of people and organisations. The rigorous development process has resulted in a strong, easy to use tool, which is already attracting international attention for its conceptual robustness.”
