Age Discrimination Statistics

The following statistics relate to complaints and enquiries of unlawful discrimination matters under the Human Rights Act 1993 (“the HRA”) on the ground of age in the areas of employment and pre-employment.
There are some limitations on this data and these have been detailed as necessary.
Age discrimination
Between 1 January 2002 and 31 July 2006 the Commission received 1235 enquiries and complaints relating to unlawful discrimination on the ground of age. Of those 1235 matters, 524 related to the area of either employment or pre-employment.

Please note that the total count of the grounds of complaints and enquiries may not total the number of complaints enquiries received. This is because any one complaint or enquiry can be made on one or more grounds.

It is important to note that the Commission does not actively collect population demographic data from parties to complaints, unless it is relevant to the complaint. Where available possible the Commission collects data consistent to the standards provided by Statistics New Zealand.
